Toilet Not Flushing Properly: Weak Flush or Keeps Running

Question: My toilet flushes weakly, does not clear the bowl in one press, or keeps running after I flush. Do I repair the cistern, or replace the whole suite?

Answer: A weak flush or a cistern that never stops is almost always a worn flapper or flush mechanism, clogged rim jets around the bowl edge, a partial block in the S-trap, or a faulty fill valve. Replacing the flapper or fill valve is a short job — published guidance is RM 150 to RM 250 including parts. Replace the whole suite when the ceramic is cracked or you have replaced parts repeatedly in the last two years.

This is a cistern and flush-performance problem. If the bowl is rising and will not go down, that is a blockage — see blocked drain toilet. If other fixtures are also slow, see clogged drain.

Why Toilets Flush Badly in Malaysian Homes

  • Worn flapper or dual-flush cartridge — the seal no longer holds water in the cistern, so the flush volume drops and the cistern keeps refilling.
  • Clogged rim jets — hard water and scale choke the holes under the rim, so water does not wash the bowl from all sides.
  • Partial S-trap or waste-line block — enough water leaves to look like a flush, not enough to carry solids.
  • Faulty fill valve (float assembly) — the cistern overfills into the overflow or never reaches the correct level.

What You Can Check

  1. Lift the cistern lid and watch one flush. If the water level is low before you press, the flapper is leaking.
  2. Listen after the flush. A continuous hiss is the fill valve.
  3. Wipe the rim jets with vinegar on a cloth if they are visibly furred — do not pour neat acid into the cistern.
  4. Do not keep flushing a bowl that is already high — that is a block, not a weak mechanism.

What a Professional Repair Involves

  1. Replace the flapper, fill valve or dual-flush cartridge.
  2. Descale the rim jets.
  3. Snake the S-trap and waste line if the flush volume is fine but the bowl still does not clear.
  4. Fit a full cistern rebuild kit on old suites, or replace the suite when the ceramic is cracked.

Costs in KL and Selangor

Published guidance is RM 150 to RM 850+ depending on parts. A running cistern is typically RM 150 to RM 250 including parts. A good dual-flush suite supply and install is RM 850 to RM 1,800 including removal and disposal; a replacement range of RM 550 to RM 1,800 installed is also published for older cracked suites. KL Servis Rumah publishes toilet, tap and sink installation from RM 150.
