Question: My TV bracket has started to move, or the wall plugs are visibly pulling out. What caused it and can it be remounted safely?
Answer: A loose or failing TV bracket is almost always an anchor-to-wall mismatch, not a bracket defect. Standard plastic wall plugs are designed for solid masonry. Fixed into a hollow gypsum partition, an autoclaved lightweight block wall, or crumbly old plaster, they have very little pull-out resistance, and the leverage of a wall-mounted TV steadily works them loose. The fix is to identify the actual wall construction, then use an anchor system rated for it — through-bolting to studs or framing, heavy-duty hollow-wall anchors, or a spreader plate — and to load-test the bracket before the TV goes back on.
A modern 55-inch TV weighs roughly 15–20 kg, and a full-motion arm multiplies the leverage on the top fixings considerably. This is a safety issue, particularly where a TV is mounted above a sofa, a bed or a child's play area.

If you cannot tell, do not guess. A drilled test hole and the resulting dust tell a competent installer immediately what the wall is.
Why Brackets Fail
The Wrong Anchor for a Hollow Wall
Plastic plugs work by expanding against solid material. In a hollow partition there is nothing to expand against, so the plug simply rotates in the board and eventually pulls through. This is the single most common cause of failure.
No Stud Detection
Gypsum partitions are supported by metal or timber studs at regular centres. Mounting between studs puts the entire load on the board face. Studs must be located and the bracket set out to reach them, or a proper spreader arrangement used.
Under-Rated or Damaged Bracket
Very cheap brackets use thin steel that deforms under sustained load, particularly full-motion arms. A bracket must be rated for both the TV weight and its VESA pattern.
Insufficient Drill Depth or Wrong Hole Size
An anchor set too shallow, or in an oversized hole, has a fraction of its rated capacity. This kind of failure often takes months to show.
Concealed Services in the Wall
Drilling into a wall containing electrical cables or water pipes is a serious hazard. Cables commonly run vertically above and below switch and socket positions, and horizontally near them.
How a Safe Remount Is Done
- Assess the existing damage. Enlarged holes cannot simply be reused — the bracket usually needs to be set out to fresh, sound fixing points.
- Identify the wall and locate studs or framing.
- Check for concealed cables and pipes before drilling, especially near switches and sockets.
- Select the anchor system for that wall type and the actual TV weight, including the leverage of any articulating arm.
- Mount the plate level and load-test it. A firm downward and outward pull on the mounted plate before the TV is hung.
- Hang the TV and check the level again, then confirm cable routing so the weight of cables is not pulling on ports.
- Make good the failed holes in the wall finish.
Trunking or in-wall cable concealment can be discussed depending on wall type — in a hollow partition, cables can often be dropped inside the cavity; in solid masonry, surface trunking is usually the practical option.

Warning Signs to Act On Immediately
- The bracket moves at all when you push the TV gently.
- Visible gaps or dust cones around the wall plugs.
- Hairline cracking in the wall finish radiating from the fixing points.
- The TV has tilted forward at the top since installation.
- Plugs or screw heads are visibly protruding further than before.
If you see any of these, take the TV down. A failing mount does not stabilise on its own; the leverage only increases as the fixings loosen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a TV be mounted on a gypsum board partition?
Yes, but only into the studs behind the board, or with heavy-duty hollow-wall anchors properly rated for the load. Standard plastic plugs in board alone are not safe for a TV.
How much weight can a plasterboard wall take?
It depends entirely on the anchor and whether the fixing reaches a stud. The board face alone has very limited capacity; the structural answer is always to reach the framing.
Should I buy the bracket first?
You can, but it is worth confirming your TV's VESA pattern and weight and your wall type first. A fixed or tilt bracket puts far less leverage on the wall than a full-motion arm.
Can you hide the cables?
Often. In a hollow partition, cables can usually be routed inside the cavity. On solid masonry, neat surface trunking is normally the practical answer without chasing the wall.
My TV fell. Can the same spot be reused?
Usually not directly. The original holes are enlarged and the surrounding material is damaged, so the bracket is normally repositioned onto sound fixing points and the old holes made good.
