Vinyl or SPC Flooring Lifting at the Edges

Question: My vinyl or SPC planks are curling, lifting or gapping at the edges — usually near doors, windows or wet areas. Do I need a whole new floor?

Answer: Usually not. Most cases are edge-lift only and are fixable in two to four hours if the planks are not heat-warped or waterlogged. Typical causes are an expansion gap under 10 mm at the walls, direct sun overheating the material, water under the floor, or a click-lock that never fully engaged. The repair is to lift the affected planks, trim the gap, dry the substrate and re-click with full engagement.

This is edges lifting or gapping. A wear layer that is peeling or delaminating is SPC flooring peeling at the edges. Compare materials in SPC vs vinyl vs laminate.

Why Edges Lift in Malaysian Rooms

  • Insufficient expansion gap (needs about 10 mm at walls).
  • Direct west sun overheating the planks.
  • Water seepage under the floor.
  • Original click-lock not fully engaged.
