Answer: During a storm, the priority is containment and electrical safety, not repair. Move valuables, catch water in containers, turn off lighting circuits in the affected area at the distribution board if water is near any fitting, and photograph where the water enters. Permanent repair — replacing tiles, re-bedding ridges, resealing flashing, or recoating a flat roof — requires a dry, safe surface. Why Monsoon Rain Finds Leaks That Ordinary Rain Does Not
Peninsular Malaysia experiences two monsoon seasons — the Southwest Monsoon roughly from May to September, and the Northeast Monsoon roughly from November to March, with inter-monsoon periods bringing intense convective thunderstorms. The Malaysian Meteorological Department publishes seasonal forecasts and heavy rain warnings that are worth watching if your roof has a known weak point.
Three things change during monsoon conditions:
- Wind direction and force. Wind-driven rain travels horizontally and upward under tile laps. A roof that sheds vertical rain perfectly can leak badly when rain arrives sideways at 60 km/h.
- Rainfall intensity. Gutters and valleys are sized for a rate of flow. In a tropical downpour, a partially blocked gutter overflows backwards into the eaves rather than draining.
- Duration. Sustained rain saturates. Small capillary paths that shed a five-minute shower will pass water during a two-hour storm.

During the Storm: A Safe Sequence
- Deal with electrical risk first. If water is near a downlight, ceiling fan, or any wiring, switch off that lighting circuit at the DB. Do not touch a wet fitting that is still live.
- Contain the water. Buckets under the drip, towels around the base, and plastic sheeting over furniture. A bin with a cloth in it reduces splashing noise and spread.
- Relieve a bulging ceiling. If a plasterboard ceiling is visibly bulging with trapped water, water is pooling above it and the board can fail suddenly. Clear the area beneath it. Piercing a small drain hole releases the load in a controlled way, but only do this if you can do it safely from a stable position — otherwise stay clear and wait.
- Photograph and note timing. Where the water enters, how heavy, and which wind direction. This information significantly shortens the later inspection.

Pre-Monsoon Preparation: The Highest-Value Maintenance You Can Do
Most monsoon leaks are the predictable result of deferred maintenance. Before the wet season:

- Look for slipped or cracked tiles from ground level with binoculars, or from an accessible window.

Temporary Measures That Are Acceptable — and Ones That Are Not
Reasonable as a stopgap: a tarpaulin properly weighted and secured over a damaged roof section by someone competent working in dry conditions; buckets and containment inside; switching off affected circuits.
Not acceptable as a fix: sealing the leak from inside the ceiling. This traps water in the roof void where it rots timber battens, rusts metal, and eventually breaks out somewhere else. Water must always be stopped at the outer surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a roof leak be repaired while it is still raining?
Emergency containment such as a secured tarpaulin can sometimes be done, but permanent repair cannot. Sealants and mortar will not bond to a wet surface, and a wet tiled roof is genuinely dangerous to walk on.
