Kitchen Cabinet Doors Misaligned or Not Closing Properly

Question: My kitchen cabinet doors have gone uneven — one sits higher than the other, they rub at the corner, or they will not stay shut. Do I need new doors or a whole new kitchen?

Answer: Misaligned cabinet doors are almost never a reason to replace the kitchen. In the large majority of cases the problem is the hinges or the frame, not the doors themselves. Hinges wear and drift out of adjustment over years of opening and closing; the cabinet frame can move slightly as it settles or absorbs moisture; and overloading a door with heavy crockery makes it sag. The fix is usually to adjust or replace the hinges, tighten the frame, and re-square the doors — work that costs a small fraction of new cabinetry.

Why Cabinet Doors Drift Out of Line

1. Worn or Loose Hinges

The most common cause. European-style concealed hinges have screws that slowly loosen, and the hinge's internal springs wear so the door no longer pulls shut. A door that used to close cleanly and now hangs a few millimetres low is usually a hinge problem.

2. Frame Movement

Kitchen cabinets are fixed to walls and each other. As a building settles, or as humidity in a Malaysian kitchen cycles, the carcass can twist very slightly — enough to throw door alignment off.

3. Overloading

Hanging heavy pots, jars or stacked plates from a door makes it sag over time and stresses the hinge mounting points. Glass-fronted doors are especially sensitive.

4. Wrong Hinge for the Door

A thin, lightweight hinge fitted to a heavy or glass door will fatigue early. The correct hinge type and count matters more than most owners realise.

For a kitchen where most doors are tired but the carcasses are still sound, a kitchen makeover replacing doors and hardware is often better value than a full rebuild.

What a Proper Fix Involves

  1. Check every door for droop, rubbing and latch behaviour.
  2. Tighten and adjust the hinges first — this resolves most single-door issues.
  3. Replace worn or failed hinges and soft-close dampers where needed.
  4. Re-secure the frame if the carcass has moved or pulled from the wall.
  5. Re-square and re-hang doors so gaps are even top and bottom.

A kitchen professional can also confirm whether the carcass itself is still sound before you spend on cosmetic fixes. See kitchen cabinet material guide if you are weighing repair against replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you fix soft-close hinges?

Yes. We replace worn dampers and hinges with quality soft-close hardware so the door closes gently and stays shut.

Do you repair existing cabinets or only install new ones?

Both. We adjust and repair existing kitchen cabinets — hinges, doors and frames — as well as install new cabinetry.

Is it cheaper to adjust hinges or replace the door?

Almost always adjustment. A door only needs replacing if it is warped, cracked or water-damaged; most misalignment is hinge or frame related.

Why do doors misalign in humid kitchens?

Timber and board expand and contract with humidity, and repeated expansion can loosen hinge screws and shift the frame slightly.

How long does a hinge adjustment take?

A single door is usually corrected in under an hour. A full kitchen with multiple doors and a frame check typically takes a morning.
