Question: My door has dropped and now scrapes the floor and will not latch properly. Does the whole door need replacing?
Answer: Almost never. A dropping, scraping or non-latching door is nearly always caused by one of four things: hinge screws that have lost grip in the timber frame, worn or bent hinges, a timber door that has swollen with humidity, or a strike plate that no longer aligns with the latch. Each has a specific fix — longer screws or timber plugs, hinge replacement, planing and resealing the edge, or repositioning the strike plate. Full door replacement is only needed when the leaf itself is delaminated, warped beyond adjustment, or the frame is rotten.

The Four Causes in Detail
1. Hinge Screws Lost Grip in the Frame
This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Every time the door is opened, the top hinge carries most of the leaf weight in shear. Over years, the screw threads chew out the timber around them, the hinge tilts, and the whole door drops at the latch side.
The wrong fix is to tighten the same screws into the same enlarged holes — they hold for a week. The correct fix is either a longer screw that reaches sound timber behind the frame lining, or plugging the hole with glued hardwood dowel, letting it set, then re-drilling and re-screwing into fresh material.
2. Worn, Bent or Undersized Hinges
Heavy doors on light hinges eventually bend. Cheap pressed hinges wear at the knuckle, producing play, squeaking and a visible sag. Solid timber and fire-rated doors need the correct number and grade of hinge for their weight; a heavy leaf on two thin hinges will always fail.
3. Timber Swelling in Humidity
Malaysian humidity swings enough to move solid timber noticeably. A door that closes fine in dry weather can bind after a week of rain. If the bind is seasonal and mild, minimal planing plus sealing the edge is the answer — bare timber edges absorb moisture much faster than sealed ones, which is why unsealed door bottoms swell first.
Note the difference from a dropping door: swelling binds along the full edge; a dropped door contacts at a specific corner.
4. Strike Plate Misalignment
Where the latch hits the plate but will not engage, the plate is a few millimetres out. This is often the consequence of the door having dropped — fix the hinge first, then check whether the plate still needs moving. Repositioning the plate on a door that is itself sagging just moves the problem along.
What a Proper Repair Includes
- Check the frame is sound. Soft, crumbling or hollow timber around the hinge screws means rot or termite damage; screwing into it is pointless.
- Fix the hinge fixings. Longer screws into structural timber, or hardwood dowel plugs and fresh pilot holes.
- Replace hinges if worn. Matched to door weight and existing mortice size so the leaf does not need re-cutting.
- Adjust gaps. Consistent margins around the leaf — commonly around 3 mm at the sides and top — so the door does not bind as timber moves.
- Plane only where needed, then seal. Planed timber must be sealed or painted, or it will absorb moisture and swell again.
- Align the strike plate and test. Door tested closing from several positions, not just pushed shut once.

Can a scraping door be fixed without replacing it?

Why does tightening the screws not work?
