Step 1 — Map your coverage priorities
Walk around your house and note:
- Main gate: needs number-plate recognition capability (2 MP+ with strong zoom).
- Front door: needs face-level clarity (2-4 MP).
- Driveway/carport: wide-angle to cover the whole area.
- Side gates and rear: wide-angle security overview.
- Living room (indoor): for peace-of-mind + pet monitoring.
Most 3-bedroom terrace homes need 4-6 cameras; a bungalow typically needs 6-10.
Step 2 — Analog vs IP
Analog (TVI/AHD)
- Coax cable, no network setup.
- Cheaper per camera.
- Max 5 MP resolution typically.
- No cloud, purely local recording.
- Best for: Budget systems, replacing older systems, sites without network.
IP (Network)
- CAT6 cable with PoE (single cable for power + data).
- Higher resolution options (4K available).
- Optional cloud backup.
- Camera-level intelligence (motion zones, line crossing).
- Best for: New installs, modern homes, integration with smart home.
Our recommendation for most Malaysian homes: IP with local NVR + optional cloud backup.
Step 3 — Storage & recording days
Standard formula:
- 4 MP camera at 24/7 continuous = ~15 GB/day per camera.
- 4 cameras × 30 days = ~1.8 TB.
- 8 cameras × 30 days = ~3.6 TB.
We always recommend purpose-built CCTV hard drives (WD Purple, Seagate SkyHawk) — regular desktop drives fail within 12 months of 24/7 CCTV use.
Step 4 — Night vision that actually works
- Ordinary IR cameras produce grainy black-and-white footage at night.
- Colour night vision (Ambarella IMX415 sensor) produces full colour footage down to 0.05 lux — massively better for facial ID.
- Cost premium: about 25-40% more per camera, worth it for main entry points.
