Question: My LED downlights flicker, dim intermittently, or stop working within a year or two. Why do they fail so fast when LEDs are supposed to last for years?
Answer: In almost every case the LED chip is not the part that failed. The four real causes are a low-quality LED driver (the small electronic ballast behind each light), a dimmer switch that is not LED-compatible, a loose connection at the ceiling junction, and heat build-up where a downlight is enclosed without ventilation. Voltage fluctuation can contribute. Replacing the same cheap fitting again produces the same result within months — the correct fix is to identify which of the four applies and address that.
Flickering is worth taking seriously for one reason beyond irritation: a loose connection generates heat, and loose connections in ceiling voids are a recognised fire risk.

The Four Real Causes
1. Cheap or Failing LED Drivers
Every LED downlight contains a driver that converts mains AC to the low-voltage DC the LED chips need. The chips themselves can last many thousands of hours, but a low-quality driver uses electrolytic capacitors that degrade quickly in a hot ceiling void. This is why unbranded downlights fail long before their advertised life.
This is also why "the bulb died" is usually the wrong description — the electronics died, and on integrated fittings there is no separate bulb to change.
2. Incompatible Dimmer Switches
A dimmer designed for old incandescent bulbs works by chopping the AC waveform. LED drivers often cannot handle that chopped waveform smoothly, producing flicker, buzzing or a dead band at low brightness. Many dimmers also have a minimum load — replacing eight 50 W halogens with eight 7 W LEDs drops the load below what the dimmer needs to operate correctly.
The fix is a genuine LED-compatible (trailing-edge) dimmer matched to the fittings, not a different LED.
3. Loose Connections
Downlights are connected in ceiling voids, often with push-fit connectors. Thermal cycling, vibration from ceiling fans, and poor original workmanship all loosen these over time. A loose connection produces intermittent flicker, localised heating, and eventually a failed circuit. This is the cause that has a genuine safety dimension.
4. Heat and Enclosure
A downlight sitting directly against insulation, in a sealed ceiling pocket, or in a fitting with no ventilation runs hot. Heat is the primary killer of LED drivers. A downlight rated for enclosed installation is built differently from a standard one — a distinction usually ignored when fittings are bought on price alone.
What a Proper Repair Involves
- Establish the pattern — one fitting, one circuit, or the whole house.
- Check the connections at the fitting and at the junction, tighten and insulate correctly.
- Test dimmer compatibility where dimmers are involved, and confirm the load is within the dimmer's range.
- Replace failed fittings with a quality branded LED downlight — a driver from a reputable manufacturer is what actually determines lifespan.
- Check ventilation and clearance so the replacement is not installed in the same thermal trap.
- Investigate supply-side issues where dimming coincides with heavy appliances starting — that points to circuit loading rather than the lights.

- Buy on driver quality, not just lumens and price. Reputable brands publish real warranty terms.
- Match the dimmer to the fitting, and confirm the total load falls within the dimmer's stated range.
- Check whether the fitting is rated for enclosed or insulation-contact installation if your ceiling void is tight.
- Prefer replaceable-lamp fittings where practical — with an integrated unit, a driver failure means replacing the whole fitting.
- Keep colour temperature consistent across a room; mixing 3000K and 4000K in one ceiling looks like a fault even when nothing is wrong.
