Built-in carpentry is how most Klang Valley condos and terrace houses get storage that actually fits the room. Freestanding wardrobes leave a dust gap. A floor-to-ceiling wardrobe, a TV wall with hidden cables, or a slim shoe cabinet at the entrance uses the wall you already have.
Direct answer: KL Servis Rumah designs, manufactures and installs custom carpentry across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor — wardrobes, TV consoles, study desks, feature walls and entry storage — from RM 300 / linier ft, with a 5-year cabinet structure warranty.
This guide covers what we build, how plywood and MDF are used, and what a proper site-to-workshop job looks like.
Carpentry services we provide
- [Built-in wardrobe](/services/carpentry/built-in-wardrobe) — floor-to-ceiling wardrobe with drawers, shelves, hanging rails, and laminate or mirror doors. From RM 320 / linier ft.
- [TV console and feature wall](/services/carpentry/tv-console-and-feature-wall) — console with drawers, floating shelves, cable management and matching wall panelling. From RM 1,500.
- Study desk and home office — built-in desk with cable holes, drawers and overhead cabinets. From RM 1,100.
- Shoe cabinet and entry storage — slim tilt-out shoe storage, bench, mirror and lighting. From RM 1,800.
Kitchen work is a separate trade with wet-area detailing — see kitchen cabinets and countertops. Door leaves and frames are under door repair and installation.
What “custom carpentry” means on a quotation
Custom joinery is not the same as assembling a flat-pack wardrobe on site. A proper job is:
- Measured on site (including ceiling drop, air-cond trunking and skirting).
- Drawn and quoted with carcass material, door finish and hardware named.
- Cut and edged in a workshop.
- Installed, scribed to the wall and ceiling, then adjusted.
If someone is cutting raw boards in your living room with no edge banding and no drawing, that is site carpentry of a different standard.
Plywood vs MDF for built-ins
| Plywood | MDF | |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | Wardrobe carcass, shelves that take weight, anything you may refit later | Painted door panels, feature-wall panelling, flat decorative faces |
| Moisture | Better than MDF if a window sweats or a cup spills | Swells if it takes water — avoid for wet or window-side carcasses |
| Screws | Holds hinges and rails well | Fine for light panels; hinges need proper inserts |
| Finish | Usually laminated or veneered | Usually spray-painted or wrapped |
Most KL wardrobes we build use a plywood carcass with laminate or painted doors. Feature walls often mix MDF panelling on a plywood or GI frame. The written quote should say which is which.
When you need built-in carpentry
- A bedroom has a 600–700 mm recess that a shop wardrobe cannot fill.
- You want the wardrobe to hit the ceiling so clothes do not collect dust on top.
- The TV wall has a mess of decoder, fibre and plug points.
- The entrance is too narrow for a deep shoe rack.
- A condo study needs a desk that does not waste the only window wall.
If a wardrobe door already refuses to close, that can be hinge sag, a swollen door, or a racked carcass. See wardrobe door not closing before you assume you need a full rebuild.
How a carpentry job runs
- Site visit and measurement — laser or tape on width, height, depth; note AC, beams and sockets.
- Design and quotation — internals (drawers vs hanging), door style (swing, sliding, walk-in), finish and hardware.
- Workshop manufacturing — typically 2–3 weeks after design approval.
- On-site installation — 1–2 days for a typical bedroom wardrobe; longer for a full TV wall.
- Alignment and handover — doors planed to the reveal, soft-close tuned, handles fitted, site swept.
Condo work follows management hours, lift padding and debris rules. We regularly install in high-rises as well as landed houses.
How much does custom carpentry cost?
| Service | Starting price |
|---|---|
| Built-in wardrobe | From RM 320 / linier ft |
| TV console & feature wall | From RM 1,500 |
| Study desk & home office | From RM 1,100 |
| Shoe cabinet & entry storage | From RM 1,800 |
“Linear ft” is the width of the run, not the internal shelf area. A 8 ft wardrobe is priced on that 8 ft, then adjusted for full-height vs low, sliding vs swing, and the number of drawers. You can supply handles; if you do, hardware is outside warranty but assembly workmanship still applies.
What we check before we cut boards
- Wall plumb and floor level — sliding doors fail first on a sloped floor.
- Whether the wall is brick, concrete or gypsum — fixings change.
- Hidden pipes and cables before we chase or drill a TV wall. For mounting only a TV, heavy TV wall mounting may be enough.
- Door swing versus bed position and air-cond blow.
- Whether you need extra electrical points inside the wardrobe or under the desk.
Common mistakes
- Measuring width but forgetting the ceiling bulkhead, so doors cannot open.
- Using MDF shelves for folded jeans in a humid room with no edge seal.
- Building a TV cabinet with no rear cable void, then drilling the back panel later.
- Choosing sliding doors on a run that is too shallow for the track.
- Skipping soft-close on heavy wardrobe doors.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a built-in wardrobe take?
About 4 to 6 weeks from design sign-off: a week for drawings, 2–3 weeks in the workshop, then 1–2 days to install.
Can I supply my own handles and runners?
Yes. Name the brand on the quote. Supplied hardware is not under our parts warranty.
Do you work in condos such as Mont Kiara or Bangsar?
Yes. Built-ins are common in KL condos. We follow management work hours and lift protection.
Is carpentry the same as a kitchen cabinet job?
No. Kitchens need wet-area detailing, countertops and services. That is the kitchen cabinet service.
What warranty do I get?
A 5-year cabinet structure warranty on the carcass we build, as written on the quotation.
