Autogate Not Closing or Motor Running Continuously

Question: My auto gate opens normally but will not close, or the motor keeps running without stopping. Sometimes it reverses halfway. Is the motor dying?

Answer: Not necessarily — and a gate that opens but will not close is usually a control or safety issue rather than a worn-out motor. The four most common causes are a faulty limit switch that no longer tells the motor where to stop, a blocked or misaligned obstruction sensor that keeps tripping the safety reverse, a failing motor capacitor that cannot drive the gate closed, or a remote or control-board fault sending the wrong signal. The fix is to test and replace the faulty component — often a small, inexpensive part — rather than replace the whole motor.

Why an Autogate Stops Closing

CauseTypical clue
Faulty limit switchMotor runs past the stop point, or never stops
Blocked obstruction sensorGate reverses as if something is in the way
Motor capacitor failureMotor hums but lacks power to close
Remote or board faultGate ignores the close command intermittently
Misaligned safety beamGate reverses at the same point every time

What to Check Before You Call

  1. Look at the safety sensors (photobeams) on either side of the gate. Dirt, spider webs or a knocked-out alignment will make the gate refuse to close.
  2. Listen to the motor. A hum without movement, or slow travel, points to the capacitor.
  3. Try the manual release so the gate can be opened and closed by hand while the fault is fixed — important for security.
  4. Note whether it happens every time or only sometimes — intermittent faults often point to a board or remote.

What a Technician Does

An autogate technician will typically:

  • Test and replace the limit switch so the motor stops at the correct points.
  • Clean and realign the safety sensors and photobeams.
  • Test and replace the motor capacitor where the motor is weak.
  • Reprogram or replace the control board if it is sending faulty signals.
  • Service the motor and track, and check the hinges and wheels run freely.

KL Servis Rumah repairs and services common autogate brands and can also fit a battery backup so the gate still works during power cuts. Autogate work carries the published 12-Month Motor & Installation Warranty.

Costs in KL and Selangor

Published guidance for this problem is RM 250 to RM 1,200+, depending on motor or sensor replacement. KL Servis Rumah publishes autogate motor replacement and service from RM 950, and single swing autogate installation from RM 2,200 where a new system is needed. A limit-switch or sensor repair is typically at the lower end of the range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you repair existing autogate motors?

Yes. We repair and service common autogate brands, including Autogate 2000, Nice and FAAC, plus many others.

Do you install battery backup?

Yes. We recommend and install battery backup so the gate keeps operating during power outages.

Why does my gate reverse when nothing is there?

Usually the safety sensors or photobeams are dirty, misaligned or failing, making the gate think something is in the way.

Is it dangerous if the motor keeps running?

Yes — a motor that does not stop can overheat and damage itself or strain the gate. It should be switched off and checked promptly.

Should I replace the motor or just the part?

Most "not closing" faults are a limit switch, sensor or capacitor — far cheaper than a motor. The motor is only replaced when it has genuinely failed.
