LED downlight installation in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor starts from RM 120 per point, including the ceiling cut-out, wiring, driver placement, and installation of the fitting. KL Servis Rumah installs COB LED downlights, panel lights, and adjustable models in homes, offices, and shops.

Downlights are the most popular recessed lighting choice in Malaysian interiors — they give a clean, modern ceiling and distribute light evenly. This guide covers the types available, what installation involves, and how to avoid the common problems that cause flickering and early failure.

Types of LED Downlights

  • COB downlights — a single LED chip behind a lens; even, flicker-free light with a defined beam. The most common choice for living rooms and corridors.
  • Panel lights — a flat square or round panel; even diffused light, popular for kitchens and offices.
  • Adjustable/gimbal downlights — the light direction can be tilted, useful for feature walls and artwork.
  • Smart downlights — dimmable and app-controlled via Wi-Fi or Zigbee (e.g., Tuya-based devices).

When choosing, check the colour temperature (warm 3000K for bedrooms, neutral 4000K for kitchens and bathrooms) and the CRI (colour rendering) if colour accuracy matters — for example, in a dressing area or shop.

What Installation Includes

  1. Position marking — the installer confirms the layout, avoiding ceiling joists and existing wiring.
  2. Cut-out — a clean hole is cut in the ceiling board (gypsum, plasterboard, or concrete with a chase for wiring).
  3. Wiring — the point is wired to the lighting circuit with a secure connection; new points are run from the nearest circuit.
  4. Driver placement — the LED driver is mounted in the ceiling void with room for heat to escape, and concealed.
  5. Fitting — the downlight is clipped in, the trim seated flush, and the light tested.

For gypsum and plaster ceilings, cut-outs are made cleanly; for concrete ceilings, surface-mounted or recessed boxes are used with the wiring chased or trunked.

Why Downlights Fail Early (and How to Prevent It)

  • Poor heat management — LED drivers hate trapped heat. A downlight in an unventilated void runs hot and fails early; choosing quality drivers and allowing airflow extends life.
  • Incompatible dimmers — not all dimmers work with LED. Using a trailing-edge dimmer designed for LEDs prevents buzzing and flicker.
  • Cheap drivers — the driver is the most likely part to fail. Quality drivers and proper installation reduce early failures.
  • Overloaded circuits — adding many downlights to an existing circuit can exceed its capacity; the installer checks the load.

If your existing lights flicker, our guide on flickering downlights explains the causes — from driver issues to loose connections.

Doing several downlights in one visit reduces the per-point price. A typical living room installation of 6–8 points is usually completed within a day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many downlights do I need for a living room?

A common rule of thumb is one downlight per 8–12 square feet of ceiling, but the right number depends on the beam angle, ceiling height, and how bright you want the room. During a site visit, we can recommend a layout.

Can downlights be installed in a concrete ceiling?

Yes. For concrete ceilings, surface-mounted downlight boxes are used with wiring in trunking or chased into the concrete. It is more labour-intensive, so the price is slightly higher than a plaster ceiling installation.

Do downlights work with existing dimmer switches?

Only if the dimmer is LED-compatible. Standard dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs can cause buzzing and flicker with LEDs. We replace incompatible dimmers as part of the job where needed.

How long does a downlight installation take?

Each point takes roughly 30–45 minutes on a plaster ceiling. A six-point living room installation is typically a half-day job.

Do you supply downlights?

Yes, we supply and install quality COB downlights and can quote fixtures and installation together.
