Vinyl or SPC Flooring Lifting at the Edges — Causes, Fixes & Cost in KL

Vinyl or SPC planks curl, lift, or gap at the edges — usually near doors, windows, or wet areas.

Estimated professional fix: RM 250–RM 1,800+ depending on plank count

Lifting or curling vinyl and SPC planks are a stress problem, not a dead floor. The boards expand in heat and contract in the cool, and if the 10 mm expansion gap at the walls was never left, or has been taken up, the planks have nowhere to move — so they push against each other and pop up at the edges, usually near doors, windows, or wet areas. In Malaysian homes the two usual triggers are direct west-facing sun baking one wall of the floor and water that has seeped under a plank during monsoon. The click-lock still holds, which is why the same planks can almost always be lifted, dried, and re-clicked.

Common causes

Insufficient expansion gap at walls (needs 10 mm)
Direct sunlight overheating the material
Water seepage under the flooring
Original click-lock not fully engaged

Professional solutions

Lift affected planks
Trim expansion gap at walls
Dry the substrate fully before reinstall
Re-click planks with full engagement

Safe DIY checks first

  1. 1Walk the perimeter and press down on each lifted plank — note which ones move, click, or gap when pushed
  2. 2Check the wall gap: it should read about 10 mm; if the plank sits flush against the wall, the expansion gap is the cause
  3. 3Look under and around the lifted edges for discolouration, a damp smell, or a wet substrate
  4. 4Map which rooms are affected — sun-baked west rooms point to heat, wet entry areas point to water

When to call a pro

Multiple planks are lifting in the same area
You feel movement when walking on them
Water is visible under the plank edges

What affects the cost

Spot repair — lifting, drying and re-clicking a few planks — starts around RM250 and is usually done in 2–4 hours. Extensive edge lifting along a whole wall, or planks that must be replaced after waterlogging, runs RM800 to RM1,800+ depending on plank count and whether the substrate needs drying or patching. We confirm the cause (heat versus water) before starting, and the re-click workmanship is covered by the standard warranty.

How to prevent it

Keep the 10 mm expansion gap at every wall and column — never fill it solid with skirting
Lay doormats at entrances so rain-soaked shoes do not drag water across the floor
Use curtains or UV film on west-facing windows to cut direct sun on the boards
Wipe spills immediately and never wet-mop vinyl or SPC flooring

FAQs

Can lifting vinyl be reused?

Usually yes if not heat-damaged. We lift, dry, trim expansion gap and re-click the same planks.

Do I need to replace the whole floor?

Only if planks are heat-warped or waterlogged. Most cases are edge-lift only — fixable in 2-4 hours.

How to prevent future lifting?

Ensure 10 mm expansion gap at walls, avoid direct west-facing sunlight, and use rugs in wet-prone entryways.
